The training in Sumy taught how to counteract abusive relationships
On July 16, in the city of Sumy, at the ADRA Ukraine Protection and Support Center, a psychological training was held at the topic named «When “love” hurts: how to prevent abuse». The event was devoted to the topic of abusive relationships and domestic violence and was organized within the framework of the “MHWP” project with the support of the Government of Canada and ADRA Canada.
The purpose of the training was to provide participants with knowledge about the signs of violent relationships, to introduce them to the hidden forms of abuse — psychological, economic, digital —, as well as to theoretical models of violence, in particular the abuse cycle and the Karpman triangle. Special attention was paid to the creation of a safe space for reflection and strengthening of the internal resource.
Psychologist Marina Vasina and facilitator Kateryna Dribonog used a number of psychotherapeutic methods adapted to working with the group: elements of trauma therapy and the Gestalt approach, art therapy practices (working with metaphorical associative cards, creating resource paintings on wooden boards), reflective dialogues, visual materials and practical tools of support in situations of violence.
Participants explored internal roles in relationships, learned to recognize «red flags» of toxic interactions, worked out topics of self-esteem, guilt, traumatic bonding, and internal limitations.
The training took place in a supportive psycho-emotional atmosphere, which contributed to emotional relief and mobilization of adaptive resources. Finally, each participant chose the resource metaphorical card — as a symbol of the own strength and support, which can always be found within oneself.
