Izyum city in focus: Cindy McCain and Iryna Vereshchuk saw the work of humanitarian organizations on the spot

On June 18, the city of Izyum in the Kharkiv region, where employees of the charitable organization ADRA Ukraine distributed food kits from the UN World Food Programme (WFP), was visited by a high-level delegation. It includes Executive Director of WFP Cindy McCain, Director of WFP in Ukraine Richard Ragan, Head of the WFP Dnipro Office Salim Moussa, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk and representatives of local authorities – Chief of Military Administration Izyum Serhii Fedchenko and Head of Education Department Oleksii Bezkorovaynyi.

The honored guests witnessed the process of issuing humanitarian aid, talked with ADRA Ukraine employees and residents of the city, learned more about the situation in the city of Izyum and the organization of assistance on the ground.

The distribution of food kits from the WFP with the support of ADRA Switzerland took place at two locations: in the school destroyed during the occupation, where 300 people received the assistance, and on the territory of the historical building – the former school of 1888, where another 200 people received the assistance.

The purpose of Cindy McCain’s visit was to personally see how the organization headed by her works in Ukraine. She talked with the ADRA Ukraine team, learned about the logistics and distribution of humanitarian aid, the specifics of cooperation with WFP, the procedure for registering recipients and the principles of targeting.

Cindy McCain also spoke with residents of the city of Izyum who shared personal stories: how they survived the occupation, how the war changed their lives, and what role humanitarian aid plays for them.

Iryna Vereshchuk, in turn, discussed with representatives of ADRA Ukraine and local authorities the mechanisms for implementing the program, vulnerability criteria, an approach to helping those who do not included into the main category of beneficiaries, as well as the general specifics of work in the region.

Also, representatives of the Fondation Suisse de Déminage (FSD) organization worked on the territory of the second location, conducting an informational campaign on mine danger for residents of the city.
