“Even Here, Flowers Bloom”: residents of frontline communities share their lives through disposable cameras
ADRA Ukraine joined an initiative of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), as part of which residents of frontline areas received disposable film cameras to show daily life near the front line. On October 31, an exhibition of these photos opened at the gallery named “Lavra” in Kyiv under the title “Even Here, Flowers Bloom.”
As a partner of the initiative, ADRA Ukraine distributed cameras in communities where joint WFP projects are implemented, providing food and cash assistance (with the support of ADRA Switzerland). In particular, six disposable cameras were given to residents of Kharkiv region (the city of Izyum, and the villages of Vilkhuvatka and Dovzhanka in the Vilkhuvatska community of Kupiansk district) and Kherson region (the village of Osokorivka in the Novovorontsovka community of Beryslav district).
Over several weeks, people photographed their everyday lives — moments of joy, routine, resilience, and renewal. The film was later developed, and the images became the basis of the photo exhibition, which will run at Kyiv’s Lavra gallery until November 11.
The goal of the initiative is to show the world the real lives of those who remain near the frontline and, through the power of their stories, draw greater attention and support for humanitarian programs in Ukraine. Even where shells fly overhead, people hold on to the ability to see beauty and to appreciate life.
