On the night of July 5-6, Kyiv experienced one of the most massive air attacks. As a result of the strike, civilians were killed and injured. Among those affected by this tragedy is the family of ADRA Ukraine employee Andrii.

That evening, Andrii’s parents came to visit their children. During the air raid, the whole family, as before, descended from the 21st floor to the first floor of the building. They believed that the stairwell inside the building was a safer place. However, that’s where the blow fell.

At the time of the explosion, Andrii’s sister was sitting behind the load-bearing wall with her children. This is what saved their lives. Parents and Andrii were nearby on the stairs. After the first explosion, Andrii managed to warn that another rocket was approaching, and in a moment the stairwell turned into rubble from fragments of concrete, dust and smoke.

The exit from the house was blocked. Saving the children, the sister began to climb the stairs barefoot. Along the way, she heard the voice of her mother, who said she couldn’t get up because of her broken legs. Andrii also found himself under the rubble, but tried to get out on his own. His father, along with other men, carried his wounded wife in his arms. Eventually, the family managed to get out of the house with an external ladder and reach a safer place, while explosions were still going on around them.

As a result of the attack, Andrii suffered a closed leg fracture, his mother — an open leg fracture. The father was also injured. Currently, Andrii and his mother are in the hospital, where they undergo operations and further treatment. Andrii’s sister and her children were given bruises.

The building suffered significant destruction, was left without water, electricity and other communications. There are dead among the residents, and those who survived are being prepared for resettlement.

After the experience, the family says that the biggest pain is awareness of how close death was and compassion for neighbors who died or were injured. Long-term treatment, recovery and search for new housing await them.

ADRA Ukraine expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and supports all those who suffered as a result of this attack. We wish Andrii, his parents and all the wounded a speedy recovery, strength and support on the way to restoration.
