ADRA Ukraine and ADRA Canada visited Chernihiv region after getting acquainted with humanitarian work on the ground
Teams of the Ukrainian and Canadian representative offices of ADRA made a joint field visit to the Chernihiv region as part of the implementation of the “MHWP” project aimed at supporting the war-affected population.
During 2025 and in 2026, this project, funded by the Government of Canada, provides comprehensive assistance to residents of front-line and affected communities. One of the key areas was the preparation for the winter period — households received financial assistance for the purchase of solid fuel, as well as fuel briquettes. Support was provided to residents of Vertiivska, Petrivska, Zhukivska and Veresochska communities.
During the visit, the team visited the sites of implementation of the winter support component, spoke with representatives of local authorities (named starostats), received feedback from beneficiaries on the assistance received, and learned about the current needs of the population in the region.
Particular attention was paid to the component of psychosocial support. The Center for Protection and Support of ADRA Ukraine operates in the city of Chernihiv, where psychological services are provided for the population. The delegation got acquainted with the work of the center, talked with the team of psychologists and discussed the main challenges and requests in the field of mental health.
During the visit, the team also attended a group class for teenagers on the topic: «Why my body sounds the alarm».
The participants of the training, together with psychologists, talked about anxiety as a natural reaction of the body that performs a protective function. The main goal of the event was to help teenagers understand that anxiety is not a weakness, but an important body signal that should be learned to recognize and regulate.
During the class, teenagers learned about the mechanisms of anxiety, learned the basic techniques of self-regulation, and understood the importance of caring for one’s own emotional state. Teenagers got acquainted with practical tools that help control the anxiety state. These are, in particular: breathing techniques, grounding exercises, methods of stressing and relaxing the body, art therapy approaches, physical activity as a way to stabilize the condition.
During the art therapy part, the participants learned to express and unload complex emotions through creativity. This helps to reduce psycho-emotional stress, not accumulate it and avoid negative reactions in everyday life.
Joint field visits are an important part of project implementation, as they allow a better understanding of people’s needs, assess the effectiveness of aid and plan further steps to support the affected population.
