“It was like a miracle”: how ADRA Ukraine helped to arrange a shelter in the lyceum

In 2025, the charitable organization ADRA Ukraine helped the municipal institution “Chernihiv Lyceum” of the Chernihiv Regional Council to repair parts of the shelter premises – UAH 30, 000 were transferred for the purchase of building materials. These funds were raised thanks to donations sent through the organization’s website.

Says Vasily Gorbachenko, deputy director for economic work:

– Lydia Mikhailivna, director of the institution, and I reasoned how and for what money to repair the remaining shelter premises. We need materials, but we don’t have enough money. Lydia Mikhailivna asks: “What is needed first?” I say: “Primer, plaster mixture, putty and water-based paint.”

And literally in a moment – as if someone heard our conversation – a man enters the territory of the lyceum. Introduced himself as a clergyman. He said, “I can help you.” We told him what we needed. He said, “All right.” And – less than an hour – the delivery from the base arrives. Everything came in full, what was asked. Starting and finishing putty (30 and 10 bags, respectively), primer, water-based paint – all we need. We quickly accepted it all, unloaded it – and got to work.

Partly for these funds, sections of the electrically conductive network in these premises were replaced.
It really was like a miracle to us. I still wonder: just a man appeared – and offered help.
Thanks to this support, we were able to completely update the four rooms in the shelter. Previously, there was an old Soviet Union times basement – with a rough concrete finish, the “shuba” (EN: coat), as the people here say. And now – plastered, whitewashed, painted. Our girls redid everything with their own hands – and it became modern, beautiful and cozy.

On behalf of all students and teachers of the Lyceum, we sincerely thank ADRA Ukraine for this important assistance!
