Training for Rapid Response Teams: ADRA Ukraine employees improved their skills in Slovakia
During a natural disaster, every moment is important – as well as advance preparation. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), represented in more than 120 countries around the world, is designed to provide quick and effective assistance in case of emergencies. However, such readiness is not an accident; it stems from strategic investment, careful preparation and strong partnerships.
To strengthen their ability to respond to disasters, ADRA Ukraine employees took part in an intensive training for Rapid Response Teams in May this year in the High Tatras (Slovakia), which was organized by ADRA Europe. Twenty-five humanitarian specialists from 11 European countries participated in this refresher program, which combined theoretical classes with complex practical modeling of disasters. The goal is not only to assess the knowledge of the participants, but also to develop their ability to think critically, coordinate effectively and work under high stress.
The training included realistic field exercises that simulated a humanitarian crisis in the Roma community. Participants had to plan and implement responses in accordance with international humanitarian standards – all under control of appraisers. To deepen the training, experienced specialists from Ukraine, Syria and Lebanon were invited, who shared their experience in modern emergencies.
During the simulation, teams were expected to set up coordination mechanisms, manage logistics and provide the necessary assistance – just as they would during a real emergency. Those who successfully complete the course will be eligible to join the ADRA Europe Regional Register – a reserve group ready to deploy in response to crises across Europe and around the world.
During the week, the training participants also participated in providing real-time assistance by handing out cash vouchers to vulnerable members of the local community. One of the recipients, Aneta, a mother of six children, described how important the support was: “We only have 87 euros a month. This voucher is a Ahuge help to feed my children. ”
At the end of the program, participants became even better prepared for emergencies and contributed to broader preparedness efforts. This includes the creation of national emergency strategies, access to pre-approved funding and the implementation of an incident management system – all vital components of a timely and effective humanitarian response.
Being ready to save lives tomorrow means investing in preparedness today.
